Summer 2012

And we're back!  Our apologies for the summer hiatus, but now we have lots of updates!  Our sisters were scattered across the country (and a few across the globe) doing tons of fun stuff this summer.  We will update again soon with some fun photos (including one screenshot of sisters "hanging out" on Google+ wearing virtual eye patches and halos) and captions.

Formal Recruitment is coming!

We are getting phired up in the new house and looking forward to meeting all of the potential new members.  For information on the complete dates and times of recruitment, please visit the Panhellenic website here or the Facebook event page here.

Spring Formal 2012

On Friday May 5 the MA Gamma chapter hosted its Spring 2012 Formal at the W Hotel in Boston. The event, planned by our wonderful VP of Event Planning Claire Lee ('14), included the sisters and their dates at a wonderful sit down dinner. "A salad bar, made-to-order pasta, and cute mini desserts made up the menu.  Later into the night we enjoyed a hilarious comedy hypnosis show by Joe DeVito -- Maria Cassidy('15) and Steph Holden('14) were too funny as hypnotized participants. And of course, everyone looked beautiful!  Thanks to all for coming and making it a great night!"

MA Gamma are Supernovas!

After a wonderful Founder's Day celebration, the MA Gamma Chapter of Pi Beta Phi supported their Panhellenic Sisters Alpha Chi Omega in their efforts to fundraise for the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center (BARCC) in their annual LipSync Event. The theme this year was "Supernovas" and the Pi Beta Phi sisters definitely shined! After weeks of preparation for the competition, watch our performance!

CPW 2012

This past weekend was MITs Campus Preview Weekend (CPW) for the admitted class of 2016. For the long weekend the women of Pi Beta Phi hosted admitted pre-freshman to visit the campus and participated in activities on campus. Amongst the activities was Pi Beta Phi's CPW Brunch, in our very own home!

Amy Ou ('14), the Vice President of Membership recounts:"We had an awesome first event in the house on Saturday. It was a gorgeous day, and plenty of young MIT admits dropped by for brunch and mingling with the sisters. Even without any furniture or permanent decorations, the house already felt like a home, with sisters tossing a frisbee out front, playing volleyball, and lounging on the front steps. We even put up make-shift letters on our fence out front, complete with ribbons and balloons!"

Relay for Life 2012

This past weekend MIT hosted the 2nd annual Relay for Life at MIT raising money for the American Cancer Society. Pi Beta Phi participated with a fundraising and participating team. But Pi Phi's were also volunteers and organizers of the event.

Crystal Noel ('13) is the Vice President of Team Recruitment/Management in Collegians Against Cancer: "The event was a success beyond what we could have ever imagined. We had over 1,000 participants and raised a grand total of over $76,000, with donations still coming in. Some of the most popular activities of the night were Zumba and the 4 AM ice cream eating contest. The student performances added to the entertainment, and some of those groups stayed until the end of the night, joining the ~125 people that made it the whole way through. All the ceremonies went beautifully, especially the inspiring Luminaria ceremony. We were able to skype in with Chris Welch [an MIT student recently diagnosed with Cancer] for the Fight Back Ceremony at 1:30 am, and he sent us many thanks for all of our efforts. Overall, the event was a total success, and we look forward to Relay 2013."

And Spring Brings....Recruitment!

The sisters of MA Gamma have been participating in Informal Recruitment this spring semester. Led by the new Vice President of Membership Amy Ou ('14), sisters have been having a blast hanging out and showing the MIT Community what sisterhood has to offer in one realm where MIT Pi Phi's are particularly talented: FOOD!

On Friday we welcomed four new members to our chapter: Tanya, Christine, Kelley, and Carrie. We are all very excited to get to know our new sisters even better!

Valentine's Day at MIT

I hope you all had a happy Valentine's Day! Here's the MIT Logarhythms (an MIT men's a cappella group) serenading Kellie Courtney ('12) in our Chemical Engineering Separation Processes Course. Our professor was kind enough to record it and email it out so that we could have it to revisit when the course gets too tough. The serenade was sent to her by her Phamily: her little Katie O'Neal ('14) and grand little Maria Cassidy ('15).

It's always fun to have a Pi Phi to sit next to in class, especially when there's a valentine's day surprise!
